How to Green Your Landscape with Sustainable Moss

If you live in climate zones with rainfall, you can add beauty and visual drama with sustainable moss.  Mosses are of a plant family that is 350 million years old.  Mosses come in so many beautiful varieties and typically must live in shade.  Once established moss requires little maintenance.  If you find you have too much moss -perhaps in your garden walkways, you can safely remove it using a vinegar spray solution.  However, the benefits of using moss outweigh the negatives.

There are several options for adding moss into your garden.  At Land & Garden (www.landngarden.com) we offer two products from Moss Acres: the Moss Milkshake and the 3 Variety Live Moss Starter Pack.

The 3 Variety Live Moss Starter Pack, lets you plant preserved dried, live moss for an instant, lush, eco-friendly garden.  The package contains three moss varieties: Broom, Cushion and Sheet mosses. One package covers two square feet, or, spread out for wider coverage allowing time for moss to spread. Requires planting in shady spot, and watering until established.

The Moss Milkshake comes in a container allowing you to grow live outdoor moss for your sustainable rain climate garden.  Just mix with water (or beer!) – it will stick to most anything, including bare soil, stone, and weathered concrete.  Creates a lush groundcover for shade and Zen rock gardens. Allow six months for a new carpet of moss to form.
Hypnum moss is ground dry and then blended with a proprietary mixture of growth stimulants including powdered buttermilk, along with water retention gel and then packaged in an air-tight half gallon milk carton. Coverage rate is typically 10 square feet or more. Alternatively the mix can be sprinkled about dry and then watered in. Indefinite shelf life...

 Acidic Soil Preference?

"According to moss designer and expert, David Spain, there is common adage that mosses prefer an acidic soil in the 5.0 to 5.5 range, which is not necessarily true. Moss is often found growing on acidic substrates and this is often noted as an indication of their preference for that pH range. It is more correct to say that other plants don’t prefer pH levels of 5.0 to 5.5, therefore acidic soils promote less competition, thereby allowing moss colonization. Most mosses will colonize a much wider range of pH than other plants, since they do not draw nutrients from substrates, their need for a certain pH range is overstated."

Celebrating Earth Day & Arbor Day

Plant a Tree, Plant a Forest, Beautify Your Environment, Protect the Earth.

A global, annual event celebrated on April 22, the goal of Earth Day is to demonstrate support for environmental protection by way of worldwide hosted events.  Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, celebrated in more than 192 countries each year.  Educational programs provide those in and out of schools to learn more about ways in which individuals can take actions in their own hands to preserve and care for their earth and environmental surroundings.  The most basic steps being the practices of energy conservation, recycling, planting trees and gardens, and practicing litter prevention.

Arbor Day is an American-originated holiday held on different days in the month of April or May, in which individuals, groups and organizations are encouraged to plant and care for trees. The first Arbor Day was held April 10th, 1872, where one million trees were planted on that spring day.  Originating in Nebraska City, Nebraska, with great involvement of The American Forestry Association; now many other countries honor a National Tree Planting Day.

Plant a Tree. Plant a Forest. Protect the Earth.
