Container Gardening in Lake Tahoe

A few pictures from our temporary space in Lake Tahoe, CA, such a beautiful place to be and live!  The plants certainly enjoy the summers here!  But many of my plants I relocated from my Southern California desert canyon location, won't likely survive the winter unless I build a greenhouse, which is, of course, on the research list for fall, RIGHT NOW as this is written.

The goal is to build some sort of greenhouse that can tolerate snow!

If you can point me to products and suggestions, please email me at: sales@landngarden.com.  I do sell a couple greenhouses, but I am looking to build something that is temporary and or moveable that again, can withstand heavy snow.

A Visit to Roger's Gardens, Corona Del Mar

The Classic Grounds of Roger's Gardens, Corona Del Mar, CA

I have made two trip to Roger's Gardens within the last year, and was in heaven each time.  This is the type of destination store I would like to do with the Land & Garden business, once I have more financing.  Of course, Roger's Garden's is located within the customer demographic of Newport Beach, where the sun is usually shining warm and the average home price was listed as around $1.2 million - in one article I read.  And, location, location: it's right against a huge, major shopping mall, Fashion Show Mall.  So, you can't go wrong with this sort of traffic into your store, can you?  In fact, I think you can only succeed.

Having grown up in the Northwest and worked at various nurseries around the Seattle area, as well as operating a landscape design business there when I was in my twenties; I am quite familiar with awesome destination nursery and garden stores of the Northwest.  I loved just about every one I went to, and Swanson's Nursery was the most inspiring!  But I have to admit, Roger's Gardens tops the cake.  I've seen nothing like it.  Especially with it's grand Christmas displays.  There are about four rooms of Christmas display -the gold room, the silver room, the red and green room and the white room.

Year round, the gardens have landscaped areas to stop by and meander through, as well as little store areas such as the orchid room, the book area, the cooking interest area, the outdoor furniture section, etc.  It's like a department store for gardens and outdoor living, which is exactly how I had visioned my online retail store of Land & Garden, when I launched less than a year ago, not having seen nor known about Roger's.

Either case, below, I offer some of the pictures I took while meandering the grounds of Roger's.  Please, if there are any volunteers out there, let's partner and create a Land & Garden destination store in Northern California!  Crickets.  Humm, well, I will keep planning and dreaming in the meantime!

Lake Tahoe Landscape Snapshots Summer 2013

A Few Beautiful Snapshots from Lake Tahoe!

I recently moved my business, Land & Garden ®, to Lake Tahoe, California.  I thought to share with you some of my most recent pictures taken with my phone camera.  The images are from my outings by the lake and in the adjacent mountains while mountain biking or hiking.  The skies are so blue, the air so clean.  The people are so friendly -I'm sure happy simply because of living in such a beautiful location.  It would be great to open a store here someday....dream, dream.

But the feeling here at Tahoe is like being on top of the world.  Not only due to the high altitude of almost 7000 feet.  I'm sure that's why the native American tribes called it the "Lake of the Sky".

Who knows how long I'll stay, but it sure is beautiful!  Enjoy the pictures!

How to Maximize Your Small Patio

Image from Better Homes & Gardens

Make the most of space in your small patio, by creating the feel of an outdoor room between your house and the seating area you create. Start by placing a seating area across a perimeter corner to maximize space and create the feel of a room. Small patios may rule out garden spaces, but the use of garden planters and adding tall, narrow hedges of lush provides greenery and privacy. This outdoor room design adds a few chinese garden stools as tables, with outdoor pillows that add color and soften the look as well as providing inviting comfort. A shade umbrella is a must for daytime shade and night time cover. The center table becomes your "coffee table". The addition of ground-cover plants in this patio are cleverly added to edges of and within the patio itself, to frame the space and add as much foliage texture as possible.

Adding Gazing Balls and Spheres To Your Garden

Yellow desert blossoms in bloom paired with the iridescent yellow, hand-blown glass spirit ball available at Land & Garden.

Gazing balls and ornamental spheres add a great visual focal point to any size of garden. Whether you have a small patio, deck or large landscape, garden gazing balls and reflective, glass or any sort of sphere adds an amazing presence to the garden. Types of balls or sphere can vary in material from glass, metal, iron, wood, wire, cement, resin and more. Sizes could range from four inches to four feet. Glass gazing balls and spheres should be placed in an area with less traffic -including dogs. Gazing balls create a nice focal point when placed on a gazing ball stand made of wood, resin, cement, steel or forged iron. Situate your gazing ball in the middle or a garden area to create visual interest.
